Promotion of Balanced Fertiliser Application through Government Extension Channels under Katalyst

Under Swisscontact’s Katalyst programme, co-funded by SDC, the UK Government, and Danida, Enroute supported stronger government extension and information systems for promoting balanced fertiliser use among farmers across Bangladesh.

Enroute assessed farmer practices, information gaps, and institutional capacity across the Department of Agricultural Extension, Soil Resource Development Institute, and Agriculture Information Service, with particular focus on improving access to crop- and location-specific recommendations through the Fertiliser Recommendation Software.

Based on the findings, Enroute developed an intervention strategy to strengthen agency coordination, expand farmer access through Union Information and Service Centres and other channels, and improve awareness of balanced macro-, micro-, and organic nutrient use. Sustainability measures were embedded to continue services through existing government systems and market-based partnerships.

Key Scale & Impact

  • Nationwide fertiliser market system assessment conducted: farmer practices, information gaps, institutional roles, and extension-channel constraints mapped across relevant government agencies.
  • Fertiliser Recommendation Software promoted through government channels, enabling farmer access to crop-, land-, and location-specific recommendations via existing public information infrastructure.
  • Systemic change approach applied: coordination strengthened among DAE, SRDI, and AIS; sustainability arrangements embedded to sustain information services through government systems beyond project support.
